BIFROST BIFROST Spectrometer Vessel and Motion System
2019 - 2021 | DTU
The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) is a large scale, multinational research facility being built in Lund, Sweden. The facility will host several neutron beamlines that are being constructed by in-kind partner institutes. The Technical University of Denmark is leading the design and construction of the BIFROST instrument, for which AVS has developed the Spectrometer Vacuum Vessel, the Vessel Support Structure and the Motion and Cable Management System, including the design, production, assembly, tests and installation of the complete systems at ESS.
BIFROST Spectrometer is a 2m x 3.5m aluminium vacuum chamber that moves in a precise way supported on a low permeability stainless steel carriage and that will contain analysers and detectors for neutron spectroscopy at ESS. It is mounted on a rail system so that it can rotate in the horizontal plane around the sample axis.
BIFROST will explore the intricate physics of magnetism and superconductivity, with applications in the IT and energy materials of tomorrow. It will also be used in geoscience and functional materials.
