Positive displacement pumps
Positive displacement pumps (also known as volumetric pumps) constitute an adequate solution for two-phase satellite thermal control systems.
Requiring a relatively low flow rate and a moderate pressure head, volumetric pumps deliver an almost constant volume flow rate, independently of the discharge pressure; in addition, these pumps are self-primming and tolerant to the presence of vapour.
A distinguishing feature of AVS's novel pump design is the absence of dynamic seals, thus enabling long-term reliable operation with zero leakage. The reciprocating, pumping motion is achieved by means of a solid-state actuator, thereby improving the reliability of the system as a result of the absence of moving parts (i.e. no tribology issues). Passive check valves are used for flow control.
