FRONT-END SHUTTER EMERGENCY LINE STOP WITH TUNGSTEN BACKING
CHESS
This front-end shutter was designed to stop all radiation from the insertion device before it reaches the ratchet wall.
The shutter consists of a double-redundant remotely-actuated device containing tungsten and explosive bonded Glidcop/OFHC copper. When closed, two shielding blocks are positioned to stop the synchrotron beam, although either block by itself provides adequate shielding. The system was designed for a 5.3 GeV machine running at 250 mA current. The design is “safe by default”, i.e. power loss or failure of any component results in shutter closure ensuring the beamline is safe.
Working pressure: UHV.
